Why Learn About This?
Often times children, teens and adults are misdiagnosed with disorders and given medication that do not seem to help. We are seeing an epidemic of opioid abuse and dependence as well as an increase infants and toddlers removed from their parents care due to abuse neglect. We see clients who are struggling to function and they are already in mental health services and are prescribed medication!
We may feel at a loss of how to help them or how to teach them ways to help themselves. Nothing we have tried, or they have done thus far has worked. Our tool bag is almost empty but we are always on the look out for new methods and tools to provide them.
This is your WHY learn about this. Early childhood trauma and attachment problems are often unnoticed by many because we do not have enough education in our communities about how the early years of a persons life affect their future. The early years affect our emotional, mental, physical health development — and are the crucial years in preventing problems

Who is Presenting at This Workshop?
My name is Selma Baćevac and I am a psychotherapist who specializes in treating trauma and attachment related problems in young children and their families. My passion is spreading awareness about early childhood and complex trauma and how, if left untreated, it can create problems as well as misdiagnosis in a persons life. All of these things ultimately affect the quality and functioning of one's life.
Every day I see families who are torn apart, who are at the verge of giving up, children who have been struggling and surviving — all due to something we are not very familiar with, something we all think no longer affects us because it happened «when we were young.»
I speak from experience. As a young child I lived through a horrific genocide in Bosnia and Herzegovina. My family was affected by complex trauma and none of us knew. Only when I went to get my degree in psychology did I become aware of my own hurt and how it was affecting my everyday functioning. It took time, effort, sweat, tears and real work to heal, develop skills and start functioning in the way I had always wanted to. My wish was that my parents, doctors, teachers, and other adults in my life were able to spot this before shame and guilt started becoming big factors in my life. I wish someone had noticed that my decisions were made based on what happened to me rather than what I really wanted.
That's is why I am so passionate about this. I want to help prevent unnecessary pain from entering a persons life by providing education, awareness, tools and resources to anyone whose interest is bringing about a safer and more secure world. We all are affected by the unseen effects of complex trauma and attachment problems caused in early childhood through different events in our lives — be it private or public. We are all affected by the tragic news we receive about school shootings, community violence, drugs, alcohol, abuse, neglect, etc. Our resources and tax dollars go into treating these problems — rather than preventing them. I want you and I to become a voice on how to help prevent these for the sake of our children and their future. We can change this, one child and family at a time — but we have to look where it really matters.
Come and join me in October so we can start spreading this message together!
